A guide to navigating Valentine’s Day

What to give, do, read, watch, eat and listen to this Valentine’s Day

As Dolly Parton once said, ‘Love is sent from Heaven to worry the Hell out of you’. Sometimes it seems that Valentines Day is too.

Navigating Valentine's Day

It’s easy to get wound up about the day – expectations are high, pressure is on, and if you’re single, you are probably dreading it. We’re here to say, don’t let it! We’ve put together some ideas that will make the day – dare we say – enjoyable!

DO This one works well for both those going alone and couples – skip the crowds and pamper yourself and a loved one at home. We suggest running a hot bath, throwing in some luxurious and relaxing bath salts and lighting a candle. A glass of red wouldn’t hurt either! Afterwards, a massage would go down a real treat if you are sharing your Valentines Day with someone special. Make a impressive massage oil yourself by combining essential oils with a carrier oil like Jojoba.

SEE  If you haven’t yet watched La La Land, it’s time! Directed by newbie Damien Chazelle, it’s set in the most magical version of Los Angeles imaginable – pink and purple skies, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone floating through the planetarium at the Griffith Observatory (their chemistry is just as out of this world) and even a dream traffic jam scenario. It’s the perfect form of escapism – great for those who are single too!

READ All the Ugly and Wonderful Things by Bryn Greenwood. A powerful love story set in the midwest tells of an unlikely couple that you’ll find yourself rooting for, living in difficult circumstances. This love story is unconventional, surprising and able to win over even the most hardened of hearts.

EAT Going out for dinner on Valentines Day can be a drag – all those people, set menu’s and overpriced wines. Instead, make this nutritious yet comforting dish by Ottelenghi for your loved one and he/she’ll think Anthony Bourdain has some competition. Light a candle, set the table, and you’ll have made up for any other Valentines Day blunders, past and present.

GIVE For Her: Instead of traditional roses, a beautifully wrapped gift box filled with rose-scented goodies like body butter, lip balm and a pink wraparound bracelet make for the most beautiful and thoughtful gift.
For Him: He needs some pampering too, and for that we have the perfect gift – a baobab soap and lotion with notes of Sandalwood and Rosemary – great for dry skin!

LISTEN to British Band the xx’s new album, I See You. The band’s third album is vulnerable, self-conscious and exactly the kind of music you want to wallow in post-breakup. If you’re spending Valentines Day alone and can appreciate a night of ice-cream and self pity, this is the album for you. There are some upbeat songs, and the whole album makes great background music while you’re cooking that dinner.

Our advice – do all of the above, and don’t just limit it to Valentine’s Day!

6 Simple Ways to Banish Dry, Leathery Skin This Winter

Chronically dry skin is a characteristic of fall that we wish we could avoid, but we rarely do. Instead, we deny that winter is around the corner and neglect to moisturize. The price we pay is unenviable reptilian skin and that’s never a cute look, nor is it comfortable to live with.

Dry Winter Skin

Luckily, dry skin is easily fixable if you just follow a few simple rules and use the right products. We’ve listed six tips below that will get your skin looking new and shiny in no time and help you keep that summer glow through the long winter months.

1. Exfoliate

Exfoliating is a great quick-fix that can make rough skin smoother and more supple. It gets rid of dead skin cells, making way for new skin cells to emerge and it helps your moisturizing lotion sink in much more easily. If you’ve invested properly in a good lotion, you want it to work to its fullest potential, right? Be sure to exfoliate before applying moisturizer to ensure that you get your money’s worth. When shaving (although perhaps this happens less frequently in winter), exfoliate beforehand — you’ll get a much closer shave.

2. Use a Moisturizing Soap

It’s no good using a moisturizing lotion if the soap you’re using drys out your skin. Use a soap that is as natural as possible. You don’t want alcohol or artificial fragrances in your soap, they really strip your skin of its natural oils. The secret to beautifully moisturized skin is not just adding moisture, but retaining it as well. An olive-oil based soap or Castile wash will do the trick.
